Manchester City 4- 0 Tottenham Hotspurs: Shaw and Hemp link continues to give City the edge as win over Spurs keeps them top of the table
Manchester City gave the home fans a win to remember with a thumping victory against Tottenham Hotspurs at the Etihad.
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw scored a hattrick as her on-field partnership with England’s Lauren Hemp continues to shine. The win sees City extend their lead at the top of the table.
Bunny Shaw, the WSL’s leading goalscorer, pounced on an early error from Clare Hunt, scouring within the first 24 seconds. She scored again in the first half, helping cement City’s dominance that Spurs could not handle.
Shaw’s second goal came from a Lauren Hemp cross, whilst early into the second half, Shaw combined with Hemp again to slot home a low cross – just seconds after Jill Roord had scored City’s 3rd goal.
There were a handful of other chances for City, a shot from Hemp that hit the post, then the crossbar and then the post again. Roord had another goal disallowed whilst Aoba Fujino and Yui Hasegawa also came close.
Spurs have continued their disappointing run in the WSL this season with only a few real chances, now of which amounted to anything. The north London club has only won two of their seven opening matches so far, and a north London derby comes next.
Tottenham’s defence has been poor this season. They have conceded 18 goals already—more than any other team.
Shaw and Hemp shine
The Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp link up might be what wins City the league this season. City only lost the title to Chelsea last season on goal difference, so City must keep pushing for high scorelines.
What Chelsea lacks is an on-pitch partnership like Shaw and Hemp, they are a threatening duo who appear to thrive working together. There’s something special about this duo, something the rest of the league lacks. The pair will likely prove crucial to City’s chances of winning the title.
