- Manchester City sit at the top of the WSL table on 10 points whilst Liverpool are in fifth place on 5 points. Bunny Shaw scored two goals after Liverpool took a first-half lead.
Shaw and Hemp prove why they’re the best in the league as City dig deep to beat Liverpool
It wasn’t in anyway the best performance from Manchester City – if anything the 2-1 win over Liverpool was a little ugly. But there are a handful of moments in every season that has the ability to make or break the team – and their chances of getting their hands on silverware.
For all of City’s possession they failed for most of the match to test the goalkeeper or make any of the usual big splashes you’d expect from the blue side of Manchester. Liverpool dug deep and fought a tough battle – their game plan was easy enough to understand: sit deep and try to catch City on the break. And just before half time Olivia Smith found the back of the net to give Liverpool the lead.
“Sometimes an ugly win is just as important for the three points”
Bunny Shaw
But that incredible Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp link up proved once again why these two are the best at what they do. With Hemp shredding the left flank, weaving past the Reds, she swung the ball in – to be met by the head of Bunny Shaw, who guided the ball to the back of the net. Shaw’s second goal came in the 92nd minute with a powerful shot from Shaw, dealing a late blow to the home team.
City are riding high with a recent win over Barcelona in the Champions League earlier in the week and whilst it wasn’t the cleanest win, digging deep and fighting to the last minute is what wins matches – and what wins trophies.
