The Women’s Championship is trialling alcohol in the stands

The Women’s Championship (second-tier football in England) is set to trial alcohol use in view of the pitch at two matches this season, according to WPLL CEO Nikki Doucet

Alcohol has been banned in English football stands since 1985 as a way to prevent hooliganism at matches. Many have called for the ban to be lifted but the calls have amounted to nothing.

The culture of women’s football is starkly different from the men’s game so trialling booze in the WC first might be the first great step to lift the ban.

Women’s football in England is continuing to grow and it’s also picking up an international following. With that growth, it’s important now to really shape the match day culture and improve the fan experience.

It’s not been disclosed when the trial will start or at which match but keep your eyes peeled as the pints will soon be flowing.
