WSL match reviews and analysis: Arsenal Dominates Spurs in Thrilling WSL Derby: 5-0 Victory at Emirates Stadium
Match Highlights
- First Half Action: Arsenal took the lead early in the match when Alessia Russo’s glancing header deflected off Clare Hunt, resulting in an own goal. Mariona Caldentey doubled the lead with a powerful strike just before halftime.
- Second-Half Surge: Frida Maanum extended Arsenal’s lead with a deflected effort, and Russo added her second goal of the match with a clinical finish. Emily Fox capped off the scoring with a spectacular long-range goal in the final minute of normal time.
- Spurs’ Efforts: Despite their best efforts, Spurs struggled to break through Arsenal’s defence. Drew Spence had a powerful header saved by Daphne van Domselaar, and Olivia Holdt missed a golden opportunity in the closing stages.

Key Players
- Alessia Russo: Russo was the standout player of the match, scoring twice (one technically an own goal) and causing havoc for the Spurs’ defence throughout the game
- Emily Fox: Fox’s long-range goal was the highlight of the match as she produced a rocket of a goal
What’s Next?
Arsenal is really coming together well under new-(ish) boss Renée Slegers who took over from Jonas Eidevall back in October, following a really rough start to the season for the Gunners. But they’ve managed to close the gap at the top of the table and are now on the heels of Manchester United. They’re still a massive ten points behind league leaders Chelsea but a handful of bad games for the Blues could turn that on its head. Everyone keeps saying the title race is over but I wouldn’t be so sure. Arsenal are in nice form and hopefully won’t lose it after the international break.
Spurs, on the other hand, will need to regroup and focus on securing points against lower-table opposition to improve their position in the standings. They are currently sixth on the WSL table and next face Manchester City – which won’t be an easy task, especially with the return of Bunny Shaw, Vivianne Miedema and (hopefully) Lauren Hemp.
Tottenham’s defence has had so many holes in it this season that Spurs have conceded the most amount of goals in the 2024/25 season. The club’s defensive failures were exploited again today and it’s not entirely clear how they plan to address this. For a club that made it to the FA Cup final last season, it is shocking just how bad Spurs have been this season.
